Pretty flowers in my yard, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
Grabbed this image in my front yard this evening. These little guys are only about an inch in height total. I believe I’m almost a 1:1 ratio with my 105mm macro lens.
Technical Ramblings: This is completely processed using the Adobe Lightroom 3 beta 2 using the new beta camera profiles for the Nikon D700. I think Adobe has finally hit the mark with the camera profiles as all my nasty artifacts I would get with their other profiles are now gone. The new Lightroom 3 beta 2 is really nice as well and would recommend a download to anyone looking for a decent photo management tool.
Elk Mountain Wyoming, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
This past weekend I was driving back from Idaho Falls, ID and while traversing Wyoming on I-80 the light was just right when I came across Elk Mountain.
Technical Ramblings: This is a pano of 8 hand-held images merged in Photoshop. In my eye, the sky looked just like this, however, on the sensor is was a bit less impressive. So the pixels were punished to make them look how I remembered the scene.
Be sure to check out the image LARGE

Biggest and Brightest Full Moon of 2010, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
The moon this evening was the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. Denver had clear skies and the smog was low as well. Grabbed this image with my 70-200mm @200mm on a mono-pod. Other fun facts; Being the first full moon of the year it is also known as the wolf moon. Tonight’s full Moon was about 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons.

Palisades Reservoir – Idaho, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
I don’t normally shoot landscapes, however, after finishing up a portrait shoot in the mountains of Idaho this past fall this scene made me stop the car. The moon, a bit of smoke in the air and calm water of the reservoir was pleasing to my eyes.

Me, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
Self portrait taken in my studio (aka living room). Getting a successful self portrait is really hard. It is also good practice to be on the other side of the camera to get an idea what my clients are dealing with.
Technical Ramblings: 3 light setup. First AlienBee B800 in large softbox camera left about 2 feet from my face. Second AlienBee B800 with 7″ reflector and 30 degree grid directly above my head. Third AlienBee B800 below and behind me with 7″ reflector pointed at black seamless background. Also have a large round silver reflector camera left for fill light. Triggered with cybersyncs. Post processing is a secret.

Christmas Morning, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
My kids on Christmas morning. Glad to see they still get really excited to open the presents.
Technical Ramblings: My Nikon D700 with the Nikkor 14-24mm is setup on a tripod and triggered wirelessly. I put the camera up behind the couch and took pictures throughout the morning to document the chaos.

Rocket Launch, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
I finally had a few minutes today to go through some of the thousands of photos I’ve taken this past year. This is an outtake from a model rocket launch I did with my kids in September 2009. It’s a movie generated from 90 frames shot with my Nikon D700 and the Nikkor 14-24mm.
Story line: Rocket setup, Quality Inspection, Launch, Recovery, Transport Back To Base and A Happy Dance.
Technical Ramblings: Nikon D700 on a tripod and triggered remotely on high speed shutter (5fps). I get about 19 RAW frames before the buffer is full and the frame rate slows to a crawl. I set the shutter and aperture manually to maintain a 1/8000 sec shutter. Doing this high speed shutter helped freeze the rocket in launch.

Stills of the launch.

Xmas Lights, originally uploaded by mark.mortensen.
More xmas light abstracts. Shot with my Nikkor 24-70mm with the focus backed all the way out. Creates a nice abstract of color.
